3rd 'Lady Ship' Announced for New Cruise Company on International Women's Day

Cruise lovers haven’t even had a chance to sail aboard the first ship on this new – and much anticipated – cruise line. The Scarlet Lady launched a year ago just moments before the travel shutdown, and guests are still waiting to find out what it’s like to cruise the adults-only, Virgin Voyages way.

That hasn’t stopped Sir Richard Branson’s disruptor cruise line from continuing to build its fleet of what – in a twist of British cheek – it’s calling ‘lady ships’. So of course, they seized upon International Women’s Day to unveil the ‘Resilient Lady.’

“Virgin Voyages is announcing Resilient Lady on International Women’s Day to symbolise the spirit of its Lady Ships, and to celebrate women and their achievements, strength, leadership and resilience. Resilient Lady has a bright future ahead of her, as Virgin Voyages’ second ship to sail the Mediterranean (after her sister ship Valiant Lady),” the cruise line said in its announcement.

The Resilient Lady is due to launch in the summer of 2022, and will be identical to her two sister Lady Ships.

Nearly 3000 passengers will sail in Branson’s ‘rebel luxe’ style, with more than 20 included restaurants, (no buffet and no ‘main dining room’) champagne on demand at the push of a button, the first tattoo studio at sea, tables in suites designed to dance on, not a Broadway show to be found, but instead, a music festival-like lineup of all-new completely original Events & Gigs developed by some of the world’s most-talked about producers, directors and artists, and a‘detox/retox’ lifestyle the celebrity CEO has made famous.

When cruising starts again, Virgin Voyages’ first Lady Ship, Scarlet Lady, resumes her inaugural season from its Miami homeport on long-weekend-type itineraries that include a late-night call at the cruise line’s new private beach resort in Bimini, the Bahamas, an Ibiza-style/ music festival inspired experience with DJ’s and bonfires on the beach.

Valiant Lady, Virgin Voyages’ second ship, is scheduled to debut in 2021, embarking on three different itineraries from her homeport in the heart of Barcelona. All her itineraries in the Western Mediterranean include overnight and late night stops across some of the hottest destinations in France, Italy and Spain, like Ibiza, Monte Carlo, Marseiile, Malaga, Gibraltar. So ‘sailors’ – what Virgin Voyages calls its guests - will have the flexibility to take in a big night out, a chilled beach day, bohemian markets, or a serene spa.

“Sailing in the Med is such an extraordinary experience, and we’re so excited to bring the adventure of a Virgin Voyage to this beautiful place,” Sir Richard Branson says.

Where Valiant Lady sails the Western Med, the Resilient Lady focuses on the Eastern Mediterranean in two itineraries that give guests a rebel-luxe experience of Greek island-hopping sailing from her Athens homeport. Imagine exploring the most famous Aegean Sea’s islands of Santorini, Rhodes, Crete and Mykonos, with an overnight stay in that legendary party destination as the ship remains docked in a premiere location with access to the island’s picturesque promenade. On the ship’s other itinerary, she sails west from Athens to the Adriatic, including an after-closing-time departure from Dubrovnik so sailors will have plenty of time to experience the rich history of Croatia during the day and take part in the active nightlife, before scenic sailing to Kotor, Corfu and Argostoli.

With the announcement of the Resilient Lady, Virgin Voyages has charted a course for forever-young ‘sailors’ to replace jet-setting trips to famously ‘island party’/ music festival destinations with its new style of marine travel that brings 3000 like-minded new friends to the party with them.

#DreamNowTravelSoon

Images courtesy Virgin Voyages

World's Longest River Cruise Set for 2023

46 nights. 7 rivers. 14 countries. You’ve heard of ocean ‘World Cruises’. This is the first of its kind for river cruising and may be the start of a whole new river cruise travel trend.

The longest-ever river cruise itinerary is the perfect way to refill a love for cruising that’s been running dry since the pandemic. AmaWaterways calls it the ‘Seven River Journey Through Europe’, and it sails in 2023.

Similar in spirit to ocean ‘World Cruises’, this river cruise version is different in a couple of ways. Almost all ocean World Cruises depart in the New Year, sailing for months on a single ship. The Seven River Journey Through Europe departs June 1st at the height of fine weather in Europe. And instead of a single ship squiring guests around the world, guests on the Seven River Journey are taken on seamless overland transfers between four AmaWaterways ships

The first leg of the Seven River Journey sails the Seine round-trip from Paris on the AmaLyra. Switch to the AmaKristina for a cruise from Lyon to Tarascon, France on the Saône and Rhône rivers, then on the AmaPrima on the Rhine, Moselle and Main rivers between Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The final leg of the epic, nearly two-month long river cruise odyssey concludes on the AmaVerde on the Danube river, sailing through Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania.

Experienced river cruise travelers may have experienced ‘back-to-back’ river cruises before, but this is an entirely new experience. 144 guests take the entire journey together, developing deep friendships during this extraordinary exploration of the heart of some of Europe’s greatest history, culture, architecture, culinary and wine regions.

The cruise brings the destinations to life through more than 130 complimentary excursions including all-new tours and exclusive experiences that include 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites and local epicurean experiences. Picture yourself and your travel companions sailing through the romantic city of Paris, venturing to the historic D-Day landing beaches of Normandy, being treated to an exclusive visit to Lahneck Castle in Germany, and visiting off-the-beaten-path wonders in countries such as Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania.

On board the four AmaWaterways river ships, in addition to fine dining and hand-selected wines at every meal in multiple onboard venues, a Wellness Host offers a variety of core strengthening, stretching and yoga classes, and all of the amenities AmaWaterways’ guests have come to love.

The company has also included features often found on luxury and small ships embarking on World or Grand cruises, like complimentary laundry and portage services, as well as included gratuities and a dedicated Cruise Manager to accompany and guide guests throughout all 46 nights, 7 rivers, 14 countries and 4 ships.

When the company teased the Seven River Journey Through Europe on social media, the response was so overwhelming, it seems certain to become a new and growing tradition for AmaWaterways in future cruise seasons. Other river cruise lines may well launch their own versions, too.

But at the moment, there’s only one chance to be part of cruise history and the first Seven River Journey Through Europe, so our tip is to check your travel calendar and consult with your travel advisor soon.

#DreamNowTravelSoon

Images courtesy AmaWaterways

The New COVID Safety Measure Cruise Travelers will actually LOVE

It’s one of the least-loved experiences on a cruise. Not long after you board your ship with excitement to explore and start your vacation, you are required to put down your cocktail, and report to your ‘muster station’ for a mandatory safety drill.

Sometimes, you even have to go back to your stateroom, collect your life vest, and take it – or wear it! - to your designated lifeboat on deck, trying not to trip over the trailing ties of someone else’s PFD as you are herded up and down stairs (in a real emergency, the elevators would not be operating, so that’s how some ships ask guests to ‘rehearse’ mustering to the lifeboats) along with the entire population – crew and guests – of the ship.

Safety drills prior to sailing are essential – but no fun. And in an odd upside of the pandemic, Royal Caribbean Group, in its ongoing work to eliminate instances of large groups of people crowded together on its ships as they prepare to begin sailing again post-COVID, has come up with a digital solution.

Muster 2.0 is the elegant answer to traditional, in-person mustering for safety drills. As the company says, it’s a much ‘faster, more personal approach that encourages higher levels of safety.’

Using the technology, guests can ‘eMuster’ via personal mobile devices or the interactive TV’s in their staterooms. On embarkation day before setting sail, you review safety information digitally at your own pace and timing. Then you complete the ‘drill’ by going in-person to your assigned assembly station to familiarize yourself with its location. A crew member stationed there confirms you’ve completed your safety review and answers any questions you have.

That process meets the requirements of international maritime law and provides you with emergency drill information, but it’s also a convenient, time-saving, no-hassle start to your cruise.

Royal Caribbean’s new, technology-enhanced safety drill process makes the first day of your cruise more relaxed and enjoyable, even as it meets the post-COVID need to reduce large group gatherings and facilitate distancing. We call that a win-win-win!

As it happens, Muster 2.0 was already in the works as part of the company’s ongoing technology initiatives to update and smooth guest procedures. It was successfully tested on Symphony of the Seas in January 2020 before COVID halted cruising, and was very popular among guests who actually reported better understanding of the safety procedures using the interactive digital tool.

So when cruising starts again, guests on Royal Caribbean Group’s lines, which include Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Azamara, and Silversea, will enjoy a more relaxed – and COVID-protocol friendly – embarkation day.

In addition, Royal Caribbean Group brought the new technology to the ‘Healthy Sail Panel’ it convened with one of its biggest cruise competitors, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, to work together as an industry on safe and healthy cruising in a post-pandemic world.

In the spirit of cooperation in re-starting cruising post-COVID, Royal is waiving patent license fees to other cruise operators. Norwegian, the parent company of Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, has already received license to implement Muster 2.0 on its ships.

So although COVID has had a devastating impact on the cruise and travel industries, and has forced thousands to put their travel dreams on temporary hold, good news like this shows how some long term good is coming out of it for cruise travelers once they sail again.

#WeWillSailAgain

Images: Royal Caribbean

Copyright BestTrip.TV/Influence Entertainment Group Inc or Rights Holder.
This is the First US-based River Cruise Line to Restart Cruising in Europe

Americans are still barred from Europe, and Canadians are technically permitted into Europe but still under their own government restrictions against leisure travel and required to quarantine 14 days upon their return to the country.

So it’s hard to imagine that one of North America’s favorite river cruise lines has begun sailing the rivers of Europe again.

As of July, AmaWaterways is pioneering the re-opening of European river cruise operations, with a series of charters of AmaKristina in Germany for local guests.

AmaWaterways’ return to the rivers comes with new, enhanced health and safety protocols developed from EU, CDC, World Health Organization, and cruising authorities’s guidelines.

The line’s new health and safety measures are designed to protect both guests and crew, while maintaining the warmth of guests’ onboard experience that past AmaWaterways guests know and love.

The new and current measures include:

·     pre-boarding health questionnaires;

·     daily temperature checks for guests and crew;

·     in-depth, updated crew training;

·     designated Public Health Officer on each AmaWaterways ship overseeing the new protocols;

·     reduced capacity – AmaWaterways ships with all 150 guests on board were already spacious, but now only 100 guests will be on board;

· masks required for crew at all times and for guests while moving around the ship; and

· adaptations like plexiglass dividers accommodate social distancing in lounges and public spaces.

Some of AmaWaterways’ river ships and cruising experiences already facilitate COVID protocols, like:

·     space in the ships’ Main restaurant and included specialty restaurant The Chef’s Table already accommodate new safe distances for all 100 guests;

·     personal portable Quietvox commentary systems allow guests to hear guides while social distancing during the included small-group shore excursions (many involve hiking and biking tours that are already outdoors and naturally allow for safe distancing);

·     ships were already equipped with individual air cooling and heating units, eliminating recirculation of air in staterooms or in public areas;

· nearly all staterooms include fresh air balconies, for private outdoor relaxation, and

· Sun Decks covering nearly the entire top of the ship give guests open air space as well as stunning views along the river.

And signature elements that guests love about their AmaWaterways river cruises are still there to enjoy, like:

·     modern, tasteful ship design and the warmth of a family-owned company;

·     innovative stateroom design featuring unique ‘twin balconies’;

· wellness activities, including

·     included shore excursions featuring biking and hiking options for the active traveler;

· award-winning dining—including The Chef’s Table specialty restaurant as well as

·     complimentary fine wine, beer and soft drinks with lunch and dinner;

· onboard amenities such as hair and massage salons and a fitness room, and

·     many have heated outdoor swimming pools with swim-up bars;

· themed sailings and sailings geared towards active travelers and families as well as group and charter options.

It’s just a start for AmaWaterways: one ship in one country for local guests – for now. It’s a symbolic moment. It’s a new beginning, and proves that guests can return to enjoying unforgettable river cruise vacations under new health and safety protocols.

It’s also an indicator of how river cruising will continue to re-open as travel restrictions evolve: with charters and single-country itineraries for groups of bubble travelers, expanding step by step to include more ships, more countries on individual itineraries, with a wider range of guests traveling together.

It’s the first step towards the full re-deployment of all of AmaWaterways’ 25 ships sailing Europe’s Danube, Rhine, Moselle, Main, Rhône, Saône (in 2021), Seine, Garonne, Dordogne, Dutch and Belgian Waterways and Douro Rivers, Asia’s Mekong and Africa’s Chobe and Nile Rivers (also in 2021).

#DreamNowTravelSoon

Images courtesy AmaWaterways.

Copyright BestTrip.TV/Influence Entertainment Group Inc or Rights Holder.
Bubble Cruising? Yes, You Can Cruise Close to Home

COVID's impact on travel is having one brilliant effect: it's shining a spotlight on the boom in cruising on the waterways of North America, with new ships and new itineraries to appeal to every cruise traveler's interests.

'Bubble' travel is the first step in the return to travel.

Lynn Elmhirst, Producer/Host of BestTrip TV and cruise expert, explains the unique highlights of 6 river and fresh water small ship cruises from the West Coast to the East - plus one cruise line that's expanding operations into North America - that will inspire you to make a cruise close to home your first post-COVID vacation. And book more in the years to come.

Some of the regularly-scheduled itineraries that cross the closed US/Canada border may be modified or canceled in 2020; ask your travel advisor about the latest, up-to-date sailing information about each of these cruise lines and itineraries. There are 'bubble' cruises planned in 2020, and you can also get ahead of the 2021 season that's sure to be busy.

Columbia & Snake Rivers and Wine Regions on UnCruise Adventures

UnCruise Adventures' name makes it clear: this is a different kind of cruise line, focused entirely on active outdoor exploration by small ship. The Seattle-based company focuses on the Pacific side of America: small ship coastal cruises from Alaska to Central America, and year-round in Hawaii, with fares inclusive of fine dining, wine, spirits, shore activities and equipment.

UnCruise Adventurs' only dedicated river itinerary is its autumn, 7-night cruises on the Columbia & Snake Rivers in the Pacific North West, where they say you'll find some of the most magnificent scenery in the US in the Columbia River Gorge.

Early autumn cruises highlight the Lewis & Clark expedition route, Nature and soft adventure: rafting, hiking, a jet boat ride into Hells Canyon, kayaking, even a cycling/winery excursion.

November 'Rivers of Wine & Culinary' themed voyages feature the region's increasingly well-known AVA's. Their onboard culinary program is linked with shore excursions featuring UnCruise Adventure's own sommelier, other wine experts, winery tours, wine-pairing dinners and local scenic highlights.

The company also has a family program, Family Discoveries, with savings for children 8-13 years old, providing multi-generational families with plenty of outdoor activities to bond over.

The Mississippi River and Beyond on American Cruise Lines

The great Mississippi is the artery that has served America's heartland for centuries. Mark Twain's literary works immortalized the world of sailing and living along the Mississippi, and today, the mystique of the Mississippi remains, even as the modern world has caught up to river cruising.

American Cruise Lines offers 3 different styles of ships for guests to choose from, all built in the US, with among the largest staterooms in the industry: Victorian paddlewheelers (above), fully-stabilized coastal ships, and the first and only modern riverboats in the country (below).

This range of vessels cruises three-dozen itineraries in 25 US states, along great rivers the Mississippi and the Columbia & Snake Rivers, and both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. But the company's 9 Mississippi itineraries remain the most popular for Americans and Canadians, who often drive over the border to northern departure gateways to cruise itineraries between St. Louis all the way south to New Orleans, with calls that feature treasured Americana including Elvis' Graceland, Ante-bellum southern plantations, and the stunning design icon and newly re-opened St. Louis Arch.

All American Cruise Lines share its river-cruise style: all-inclusive fine dining, complimentary evening cocktail hours, pre-cruise hotel stays, gratuities, wine and beer with lunch & dinner, complimentary onboard entertainment and lectures, and many included featured shore excursions.

America's Great Rivers and Now the Great Lakes Too, on American Queen Steamboat Company & Victory Cruise Lines

American Queen Steamboat Company continues the tradition of gingerbread-trimmed paddle-wheel riverboats sailing the country's two great river systems.

One of their three boats (with another launching in 2020) was the first all-suite paddle-wheeler in the US. Another lays claim to being the largest, most opulent riverboat in the world. The vessel is an engineering marvel, six decks high, longer than a football field, but still with the lacy white trim and paddlewheel you associate with the era of waistcoated gamblers and damsels with parasols. Both sail itineraries on the Mississippi between iconic river port cities like New Orleans, Nashville, Memphis, Louisville and St. Louis. The third is the largest overnight riverboat West of the Mississippi, sailing on the Columbia & Snake Rivers with a vast collection of historic artifacts and Native artwork.

The cruise line has a unique, and popular, approach to shore excursions, many included with your fare. Deluxe coaches drive the itinerary's route in tandem with the boats. In port, they provide 'Hop-on, Hop-off' service, continuously making the round of major local attractions, so guests can select the attractions they most want to see, and enjoy them at their own pace.

Sister cruise line Victory Cruise Lines has two newly upgraded ships serving guests wanting to sail along North America's coasts, including the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence Seaway, Canada & New England itineraries, and an upcoming new ship in 2021 setting sail for British Columbia and Alaskan itineraries. Guests on this cruise line travel with historians and naturalists and enjoy inclusive shore excursions for expert immersion into these destinations in North American's backyards.

The Great Lakes on Tauck

Cross-border cruising can't get any better! Tauck is known for ultra-luxury land tours and safaris, as well as European river cruises. But in addition to North American land tours, it provides a one-of-a-kind Great Lakes small ship itinerary that's tailor-made for both American and Canadian guests.

Tauck's autumn cruise between the dynamic Canadian and US cities of Toronto and Chicago bookends the voyage with included pre- and post stays in Fairmont or Four Seasons hotels in both cities. The 7-night voyage between those world-class cities highlights seasonal foliage along the coasts, and includes Niagara Falls and Niagara on the Lake, Detroit, and smaller destinations (like Michigan's Mackinac Island, above) along both countries' coasts, with exclusive and included shore excursions that feature Nature, sport, culture, makers, and history along the way.

Tauck is using one of luxury French line Ponant's elegant and eco-friendly, 160-guest, 5-star ships for the itinerary, with private balconies, iPod docks, mini bars and all-included service and on board service including wine, spirits in several lounges, and dining at 2 venues.

This itinerary has been canceled in 2020 as the US/Canada border is closed and Ponant ships have been returned to France, but you can get ahead of this popular sailing in booking now for 2021.

The Great Lakes on Pearl Seas Cruises

This sister company to American Cruise Lines uses the only fully-stabilized small cruise ship on the Great Lakes and the entire Pearl Mist ship (very similar to American’s coastal ships) has spacious, all-balcony, all outward-facing staterooms. The 210-guest ship also features open sundecks, a fitness area, and a glass-enclosed spacious dining room so you never miss a beautiful sunset or scenery floating by.

Two itineraries allow you to explore the gems of the Great Lakes' world-class cities and charming smaller and lakeside holiday communities: an 11-day, Great Lakes and Georgian Bay itinerary from Milwaukee to Toronto that cruises through vast and lovely Georgian Bay, and calls in Niagara as well as Mackinac Island, and a 7-night Great Lakes cruise that also begins / ends in Milwaukee and Toronto, but provides travelers with less time a condensed cruise that still allows them to experience their own backyard from its freshwater ports.

Canada's Rideau Canal on LeBoat

Le Boat has been operating 'self drive' cruises on the canals and waterways of Europe for half a century, and in 2018 introduced their first North American itinerary. It's a one-of-a-kind cruise on Ontario's UNESCO World Heritage Rideau Canal, the oldest continuously-operated canal system on the continent.

Begun in 1826, the Rideau Canal remains today one of North America's most beautiful navigable waterways. You'll be able to swim, fish, cycle and stroll, seeing exquisite stone-masonry and pastoral countryside between Canada's original Canadian capital of Kingston on Lake Ontario, and the current national capital, Ottawa (pictured below), at the other end of the 125 mile-long canal.

There are 47 Locks on the Rideau, many with staff members to help boaters through the locks, and a lock pass is included in your fare. Where other cruises charge by the guest, LeBoat hires out the vessels, making it a highly cost-effective choice for families and even groups including solo travelers. It also means you can set the pace and follow your own itinerary. A tutorial before you go gives you confidence driving the boat.

But don't confuse LeBoat with the houseboat rental experience you may be familiar with – this is more like what LeBoat calls pet-friendly 'floating villas'. LeBoat's fleet includes new, upscale European models designed for larger groups – some as big as 5-cabin/5-bath models that sleep 12 people! – with en-suite bathrooms, expansive 'fundecks', barbecues, air-conditioning, even dishwashers in fully-equipped kitchens. You provide your own food, drink, fuel, and fun.

New York's Erie Canal and the Great Lakes on Blount Small Ship Adventures

Founder Luther Blount built his first ships specifically for one very special itinerary: the 'Great American Waterways' cruise that includes the four Great Lakes – the world's largest freshwater system – and New York state's historic Erie Canal. The ships are built for the Erie Canal's size, making Blount the only overnight cruise line able to navigate the waterway.

Guests love the casual, no dress-up atmosphere, complimentary wine and beer with meals, and a related perk that will astound seasoned cruise travelers: a BYOB policy! Not only can you provide your own wine and spirits (or buy them at local, craft wineries and distilleries along the cruise), Blount even facilitates the process, providing mixers, garnishes and barware, so you can 'pour as you please' for your entire cruise!

The Great American Waterways itinerary remains the family-owned and –operated company's most popular voyage. But Blount considers the entire Atlantic Coast part of its cruising 'territory', with itineraries sailing coastal New England and the Canadian maritimes into the St. Lawrence seaway (pictured, top, at New York's Singer Castle), as well as winter itineraries in the Bahamas.

Coming Soon: Viking on the Great Lakes and the Mississippi

This won't help you plan a 'bubble' cruise this year, but even pre-COVID, cruising close to home was gaining steam, and Viking's big expansion into North America is a great example.

From European rivers, to the world’s oceans… and soon to America’s heartland. Viking Cruises announced early in 2020 that it will cruise the Mississippi between St. Louis and New Orleans beginning in 2022.

The company’s first custom vessel, purpose-made in America for these iconic river itineraries, is named Viking Mississippi (rendering pictured top) and debuts in August 2022. It will be the largest and most modern ship in the region.

The Viking Mississippi will join Viking’s current fleet of 79 river and ocean vessels, as well as the recently-announced new Viking Expeditions to Antarctica and the North American Great Lakes.

#DreamNowTravelSoon

Images courtesy of their respective cruise lines.

Copyright BestTrip.TV/Influence Entertainment Group Inc or Rights Holder.
Do You Miss Cruising? This Recipe Will Let You Re-Create an Iconic Cruise Experience at Home

There may be no dish that evokes cruising more than Baked Alaska.

A miracle dessert of warm, caramelized meringue on the outside, still magically full of layers of frozen ice cream on the inside. No one really knows why, but somewhere along the way, it became a classic of traditional cruise culture.

Even today, Baked Alaska is often served on celebration, formal or farewell evenings. The ultimate Baked Alaska experience includes 'parades': a procession of dining room staff each bearing a flaming Baked Alaska for each table of diners to top off an evening of formal dining. (Hilariously, these days, often to the unofficial Baked Alaska parade theme song of 'Hot, Hot, Hot').

Rarely seen anymore on land, a flaming Baked Alaska never fails to awe and delight a table of diners at sea.

The story goes that Baked Alaska was created in New York's famous Delmonico's restaurant in 1867 in celebration of the American acquisition of Alaska from Russia. Regardless of its origin, creating Baked Alaska back in the day was only for the fearless. The elements are not complicated - it's really just cake and ice cream and meringue, all within reach of even a moderately good chef.

But the trick is in the execution. Get the temperatures wrong and you had a plate of dripping, soggy mess. Baked Alaska was a feat of culinary ingenuity in the days of unreliable refrigeration.

The dessert, flaming and resembling a snow-topped Alaskan mountain, became almost a status symbol and a classic showstopper of a dessert.

Perhaps the reason we still see Baked Alaska on cruise ships is that they seem to be the last bastions of hospitality traditions and a sense of ceremony.

And where better than a cruise to Alaska to learn how to make this classic cruising dish?

Regent Seven Seas Mariner's pastry chef showed BestTrip.TV his tips and tricks to perfect Baked Alaska… and shared his recipe here for you.

Until we can sail again to Alaska – or anywhere – this Baked Alaska recipe can help re-create the fun ceremonies of cruise ship dining.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' Recipe for Baked Alaska

10 Servings

Ingredients

250 grams French Meringue (see recipe below)

150 grams Raspberry Coulis (Sauce)

100 grams Vanilla Sauce

160 grams Vanilla Ice Cream (or a combination of your choice of ice creams)

160 grams Chocolate Ice Cream

assorted berries

mint leafs

Syrup

Bring to a boil, cool down

62.5 grams water

31 grams sugar

Add milk

23.5 grams butter

23.5 grams flour

5 fresh egg yolks

6 fresh egg whites

15.5 grams sugar

grated zest of 1/3 of a clean orange

6 mL Grand Marnier liquor

French Meringue

9 fresh egg whites

170 grams sugar

1.25 grams vanilla extract

Method:

French Meringue:

Start whisking the egg whites by incorporating one quarter of the sugar little by little.

Once the egg whites have doubled in volume, add another quarter of the sugar and the vanilla.

Keep whisking until firm and shiny, then add the remaining sugar and whisk for another minute.

Sponge:

Combine milk and butter and bring to a boil.

Pour the flour into the milk, keep on stirring over the heat until it starts to become a paste.

Put mixture into mixing bowl, at low speed add the egg yolks, grated orange skin and Grand Marnier.

Keep beating on fast speed for 10 seconds.

Meanwhile whip the egg whites to a meringue with sugar.

Mix a little meringue into the batter until obtaining a homogenized paste; then gently fold the meringue into the batter.

Line sheet pans with pan liners, spread the mix onto it and make a fine layer of ½ cm in height.

Bake in a preheated oven at 190°C for 10 minutes and until the sponge is baked properly, cool down to room temperature, then before using in Baked Alaska, sprinkle the syrup over the sponge cake.

Assembly:

For each serving, use a 6 cm ramekin, lined with plastic wrap.

Cut a round disk of the sponge to fit the inner part of the bottom. Fill with chocolate first, then vanilla then strawberry ice cream.

Cut a round disk out of the sponge fitting the inner part of the top, press gently down and freeze immediately

Meanwhile prepare the meringue.

Place your serving plate over top of the frozen ramekin, turn over and remove plastic wrap. Spread the meringue all over, using piping technique or a spatula. Mimic a mountain landscape.

Turn on your blowtorch and brown the edges of the meringue. Decorate the plate with raspberry coulis and vanilla sauce, berries and a spring of mint.

Serve instantly.

#DreamNowTravelLater

Copyright BestTrip.TV/Influence Entertainment Group Inc or Rights Holder.
Video: The World's Largest Spring Flower Garden - in Full Bloom on a Tulip-Time River Cruise!

They call it 'The Garden of Europe', and it's open for only 8 short weeks every spring. The spectacular Keukenhof garden in the Netherlands is said to be the largest spring flower garden in the world – and it's the highlight of our Avalon Tulip Time river cruise.

BestTrip.TV filmed this once-a-year explosion of color of blooming tulips, surrounded by some of the famous Dutch tulip fields. We were there and even we thought it was too incredible to be real!

Garden Travel expert Tara Nolan of SavvyGardening.com shares her insights into what makes the Keukenhof a can't-miss celebration of spring, best experienced from our Avalon Tulip Time river cruise.

And if you think the Keukenhof garden experience on a Tulip-Time cruise is just for girlfriend getaways, think again. The gardens are a living, technicolor business card for the Netherlands' floriculture industry - the biggest in the world. So think of it instead as one of the most stunning 'factory tours' you could ever hope to take. And bring along the guys, not just the girls. They will be just as awed as we were!

Thinking of taking a Tulip Time cruise? Here are 8 amazing facts about flowers in Holland, home of the world's largest floriculture industry:

Nearly half of the world's floriculture products come from the Netherlands.

77% of all flower bulbs exported around the world are Dutch, and the majority are tulips.

Tulips are the national flower of the Netherlands, but they originally came from Turkey; then were bred and cultivated by the Dutch into the spectacular showy flower we know today.

The appealing stripes on some of the most sought-after varieties of tulips are the result of a virus!

The total land used for the production of flower bulbs in the Netherlands is over 2.5 million acres! The Bollenstreek (Bulb Region) is more or less between Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The Keukenhof garden is in this area, surrounded by tulip and other flower fields.

You can rent a bicycle during your visit to Keukenhof to explore the fields surrounding it, and if you have time, you can even follow all or part of the 37 km-long, sign-posted 'Leidse Bollenroute'. (You'll love cycling in Holland; all the land is flat!)

Holland also exports fresh-cut plants and flowers: 2/3 of the world's total.

Amsterdam is home to the world's only floating flower market; over a dozen shops operate year-round from one of the city's famous canals.

Like we did, you can experience the Keukenhoff garden, take in some of the surrounding flower fields, and visit Amsterdam's Floating Flower Market all during an Avalon Tulip Time River cruise that delivers you to the front of the line at the Keukenhof, and overnights in Amsterdam so you can go to the flower market.

4 Tips for Planning a Family Reunion Cruise

Over the years, families tend to spread out further and further away — which is why it’s important to put effort into planning fun family gatherings each year! Family cruises are a great way to ensure that you get to see your loved ones and that you all can take a little time off together to relax and enjoy a fun-filled vacation, especially during the holidays. Whether you are getting together with immediate family or planning a big reunion with extended relatives, a Carnival cruise is a wonderful option! It’s a way to get everyone together in the same place and ensure that there will be great food, fun for all ages and beautiful scenery for everyone to enjoy.

If you’re planning a family reunion cruise, it’s a good idea to have a family meeting to figure out your travel plans and make sure everyone is on the same page. This is also when you should reach out to your favorite Travel Agent, as he or she will be able to guide you through the process. To get you started here are some key points to consider:

1. Duration

How long do you want to be on a cruise for? Cruises range from quick two-day getaways to longer trips of over a week. Everyone should weigh in on how much time they will be able to take off. It’s best to start planning early in order to get everybody on the same page. Short trips are great because they are generally easier to plan for, but if you have a big group that doesn’t get to see each other than often, you may want to extend the travel as long as possible.

2. Embarkation Point

Your family should decide on where you would like your cruise to depart from. Do you want to be able to drive to the embarkation point or are you planning to fly? There are many options when it comes to choosing a Carnival cruise departure port, so check out some of the places that might be close to you or that you could easily fly to.

3. Vacation Style

Everyone likes to vacation their own way. Some people like relaxing beach vacations and others like busy, bustling cities. When your family is together, decide on what kind of trip everyone would prefer. Do you want more beach time or more options to do cultural sightseeing? You’ll also have to decide which ship you’d like to go on. Your embarkation point will play into both of these, too. Easy destinations that a lot of families love include the Caribbean, Mexico, The Bahamas, Bermuda and Hawaii. Some provide a blend of relaxing beach time and stimulating sightseeing.

4. Cabin Sizes

When you’re choosing a cruise, keep in mind that you’ll want to choose staterooms that are comfortable for all family members. Consider the size of the cabin — some are smaller, while others will be much more spacious. Depending on the price of the cabin, they will offer different amenities as well. There are a variety of room types to choose from. Some rooms offer a view of the ocean. Some have private balconies for you to enjoy. Every stateroom is very convenient and offers a full private bathroom. You can decide if you want a standard room or to splurge on a suite!

Planning a family reunion doesn’t need to be stressful. Just start by getting everyone together in advance to make decisions about your dream family vacation. You’ll be embarking on the vacation cruise of your dreams with all your loved ones in no time!

Roundup of the NEW, COVID Insurance Options for Canadian Travellers

In less than a month, the landscape for Canadian travellers has been transformed.

Back in March, the COVID-19 virus was determined to be a ‘known factor’ and so it was no longer covered by regular travel medical insurance policies. Since then, Canadians who have wanted to travel have not had coverage for expenses incurred if they contracted the virus while abroad.

All that changed just a couple of weeks ago. With much of the world learning to manage the pandemic, and commonly-accepted safety practices to help prevent the spread of the virus, one of the next key events necessary for a resumption of travel happened:

Travel medical insurance covering Canadians in the unlikely event they contract the virus away from home.

Once the first company announced coverage, it became a landslide. At press time, there are now no fewer than 6 options for Canadians to ensure they’re covered. Here are the highlights:

Air Canada Vacations: 1st COVID Travel Insurance in Canada – With Limits

Air Canada’s packaged vacation division, Air Canada Vacations created headlines when it announced it would be including free-of-charge insurance for its guests against medical and quarantine expenses related to contracting COVID-19 while travelling.

ACV’s coverage is for up to 21 days and applied only to ACV air + hotel packaged holidays to specific destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean this fall and winter. The initiative is in partnership with global insurance giant Allianz and the program ends in April.

While not the first globally to offer COVID-19 insurance, it was a breakthrough moment for the Canadian travel industry.

It wasn’t hard to predict Air Canada Vacations’ bold move would start a trend.

WestJet: 1st COVID Insurance Available on Air-Only Bookings to Specific Destinations

Air Canada’s rival WestJet then upped the ante, offering its air-only passengers – not just vacation package guests - no-charge COVID-19 insurance lasting up to 21 days through its provider TuGo.

WestJet’s COVID insurance covers travel to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Europe including the UK.

And while the first two programs provide coverage on reservations through April, WestJet’s program runs to the end of August 2021.

Manulife: 1st For-Purchase COVID Coverage in a Standard Travel Medical Insurance Policy

Canada’s largest provider of travel insurance announced its ‘COVID-19 Pandemic Travel Plan’ launching in October. Manulife adds COVID coverage to its standard emergency travel medical policy, with specific additional coverage for COVID-19 medical care and out-of-country quarantine expenses.

It will be available for Canadian travellers to purchase prior to travelling within our borders as well as internationally, including to destinations with a Level 3 Travel Advisory.

Air Canada: follows West Jet, Offering No-Charge COVID Insurance for Air-Only International Travellers

Now both of Canada’s major airlines include COVID insurance for Canadians who purchase flights on either carrier – at no cost to the passengers.

Although Air Canada Vacations’ COVID insurance is provided by Allianz, the airline is providing its air-only passengers with coverage through Manulife. The insurance applies to round-trip, international air bookings made until October 31st with travel by April 12, 2021.

In addition to coverage for medical treatment and quarantine expenses, Air Canada’s air-only COVID insurance also covers up to $500 CDN for unexpected costs of returning home if the Canadian government travel advisory level in your destination goes from Level 3 to Level 4 while you’re there.

Sunwing: Matching Competitors in No-Charge Coverage

Air-only, as well as beach vacation package travellers with Sunwing, receive coverage included with their bookings made by October 31st, for travel between October 16th this year and May 31st, 2021.

It’s also similar to other options for Canadian travellers, offering coverage for trips up to 21 days for medical, quarantine, transfer and trip interruption costs due to COVID-19 and pandemic-related travel advisory changes.

In addition, Sunwing insurance coverage is supported by medical assistance at all Sunwing resorts, and the company points out, “As the only travel provider that owns the airline its customers fly on, the transfer buses that travel to and from hotels, as well as over 30 hotels throughout the Caribbean, Central America, and Mexico, Sunwing’s commitment to safety spans across every step of the travel process.”

Comparing COVID Insurance: Apples to Oranges

All of the travel companies have implemented expansive new health and safety protocols on their own aircraft and with land partners. Their insurance provides coverage for medical expenses, quarantine expenses, some travel and even repatriation of remains due to contracting the COVID-19 virus while traveling.

But not all of these options are the same, and making good choices when you’re choosing to travel and choosing the best insurance option can make a big difference if you do get sick while you’re away.

Questions you should discuss with your Travel Advisor to help determine which of the COVID-19 insurance options available suit your travel needs best:

· Is this available only a package (air + hotel) or will I have the coverage if I book air only?

· How much coverage does this offer in dollar terms? Is that enough for where I’m travelling?

· What are the limitations of coverage? Potential travellers should note that travel to some destinations – including the USA - may not be covered.

· Am I personally eligible for coverage?

· How long am I covered for? Snowbirds looking to spend months in the sun need to look closely at the duration of coverage.

· When does this coverage end? Different policies require you to travel before a certain date.

Insuring a Return to Travel

The travel landscape keeps changing, but it’s safe to say that there will continue to be MORE insurance options for Canadians hoping to travel in the coming months. It’s a key piece of the puzzle to give Canadians confidence when they travel.

We are all still waiting for a COVID immunization option to become available, and when it does, future travel insurance coverage - or even entry visas to certain countries - may require proof of COVID immunization.

While some Canadians may still not feel comfortable travelling yet, like any other travel/medical insurance, COVID-19 insurance is a responsible way for people who choose to travel to be protected against unforeseen expenses.

#SafeTravelsSoon

By: Lynn Elmhirst, Producer/Host BestTrip TV

Copyright BestTrip.TV/Influence Entertainment Group Inc or Rights Holder.
Planning Ahead - Destination Wedding

Saying “I do” to the perfect destination wedding has never been easier!

So you’ve decided that a typical wedding just isn’t your style. Instead, you’d rather tie the knot in a beautiful and intimate beach setting with only your closest family and friends in attendance, celebrating this new chapter of your lives with you. We couldn’t agree with you more!

Plan Ahead

Planning ahead – anywhere from eight to 10 months – for a destination wedding in Mexico or the Caribbean will allow you plenty of time to find a resort, settle all the details, and perhaps calm any nervousness you may have. Remember that certain times of the year, including holidays, may be more expensive, so be sure you know what your overall budget is and try to stick to it.

Once you have a date set for the nuptials, you and yours should discuss with your local travel professional those places where you’re most interested in getting married. Your destination selection should be a favorite vacation spot, a dream location, or one where you and your guests will be most comfortable and well-cared for.

You can even choose several destinations that you like and think will make a great backdrop to your event. Depending on how involved you would like your family and friends to be, don’t hesitate to ask them for wedding destination ideas. After all, they will be putting in their own money and time to celebrate the big occasion with you. If you already have a few places picked out you can even discuss your picks with them. And if you’re unsure of just where to go, your travel professional can help you find a range of destinations and resorts that match the vision you have for your wedding and well as your budget.

Do make sure that the destination you ultimately choose is readily accessible from the cities your guests will be traveling from. If you select a destination where you don't have direct flights to, or requires multiple connections, this may deter some of your guests from joining in the festivities.

Keep in mind that your local travel professional is your best source for helping you plan and book a destination wedding. It’s important to know that not all resorts or wedding packages are created equal, and the differences between them can be many. Only an experienced travel professional will know which resorts and wedding packages best fit your vision of a romantic wedding and honeymoon.

Planning a Destination Wedding?

You’re engaged and planning to say ‘I do” on a tropical island some thousands of miles away from home, where do you start?

START PLANNING NOW

Planning ahead – anywhere from eight to 10 months – for a destination wedding in Mexico or the Caribbean will allow you plenty of time to find a resort, settle all the details, and perhaps calm any nervousness you may have. Remember that certain times of the year, including holidays, may be more expensive, so be sure you know what your overall budget is and try to stick to it.

Once you have a date set for the nuptials, you and yours should discuss with one of our Travel Consultants those places where you’re most interested in getting married.

Keep in mind that our Travel Consultants are your best source for helping you plan and book a destination wedding. It’s important to know that not all resorts or wedding packages are created equal, and the differences between them can be many. Only an experienced travel professional will know which resorts and wedding packages best fit your vision of a romantic wedding and honeymoon.

Everlasting Love

Saying “I do” to the perfect destination wedding has never been easier!

So you’ve decided that a typical wedding just isn’t your style. Instead, you’d rather tie the knot in a beautiful and intimate beach setting with only your closest family and friends in attendance, celebrating this new chapter of your lives with you. We couldn’t agree with you more!

Couples wanting to break away from the ordinary wedding in search of peace, relaxation and romance will absolutely love opting for a destination wedding at an all-inclusive resort. These resorts offer deluxe accommodations just steps from the beach, superb pools, 24-hour room service, unlimited fine dining, cocktails and much more for one set price. Special wedding packages are often an additional cost, but remain vastly cheaper than having your wedding back home. With all this, an all-inclusive resort maximizes romance – and your nuptial dollars – making a beach side destination wedding hard to beat.

CHOOSING A DESTINATION

If your heart is set on all-inclusive luxury, look no further than Mexico and many destinations located throughout the Caribbean. With their sunny skies and endless beaches, Mexico and the islands of the Caribbean offer love birds the perfect refuge for a romantic wedding and honeymoon. They’re also home to some of the absolute best wedding and honeymoon values thanks to their exhaustive array of luxe, all-inclusive resorts where nearly every amenity – from gourmet dining and drinks to watersports and entertainment – is included for one great price.

When it comes to choosing your all-inclusive resort as the home base for your wedding, keep in mind those things you want to experience during your wedding and time there pre- and post-event. Do you want lots of entertainment? Is a gourmet dining a priority? Perhaps a relaxing spa experience is of the highest order?

Because many couples prefer to remain on-site after their wedding, and many guests turn the occasion into a getaway for themselves, staying at an all-inclusive resort provides a relaxed environment in comparison to the traditional weddings where the newlyweds are often have to rush the next day or day after to the airport for their honeymoon.

When it comes to all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean that offer a great array of wedding event options, two of the most highly recommended islands in the Caribbean are Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. These two islands are unmatched by others when it comes to their natural beauty and high levels of service. If your heart is set on Mexico, the Riviera Maya, Los Cabos, and Playa del Carmen are certain to provide the perfect background to an unforgettable wedding. All of these destinations in Mexico are easy to access and there’s plenty to experience in and around theme that you and your guests won’t want to ever leave.

Don’t forget, we can be your top resource for helping you create the destination wedding of your dreams. We are Travel Consultants and we can help you find the picture-perfect setting and resort for your big event, all at the very best possible value. That means you’ll have more time to focus on what’s most important – a lifetime of happiness together.

Discover Silversea's Caribbean - Island Paradise Like Only We Can Deliver

You can sail the Caribbean with many cruise lines but only with Silversea you get the combination of exclusivity, relaxation and deeper experiences all while being pampered by our all-inclusive lifestyle and personalized service. Here’s what makes our experience unique:

SMALL HARBORS

Away from the crowded main ports thanks to the accessibility of small ships like Silver Wind, you get to enjoy the tiny 1.5 square mile Mayreau in St. Vicente and the Grenadines.

LATE DEPARTURES

What’s the fun of being at the most paradisiac island and have to leave at 3:00 pm? We like sunsets with a cocktail at hand and a front row seat to take in the gorgeous hues in the sky.

PERSONALIZED SERVICE

Small ships also mean nearly one crew member for each guest and the peace of mind that comes when you know all your needs are being taken care of — sometimes before you even ask.

UNSPOILED HAVENS READY TO BE RELISHED

We invite you to discover hidden harbors and explore all the beauty in the Caribbean Sea. Join us as we sail through secluded ports and remote coves that other ships cannot reach. Small islands like Bequia in the Grenadines or Martinique’s charming Anses’Arlet. Escape frigid temperatures for lush tropical landscapes and rich flavors as you embark on an unforgettable Silversea voyage in the Caribbean. What better way to get to experience this incredible destination than by enjoying of our Free Shore Excursion offer and our all-inclusive lifestyle. These carefully selected shore excursions allow you to immerse yourself deeper in the islands’ culture on every port you’ll visit. What’s more, on select voyages, you can even choose to take advantage of our exclusive $199 Roundtrip Economy Air Offer or select one of the three ways to save with Silver Select. The Caribbean is ready to welcome you. And this limited time offer won’t be around long — book by November 30, 2017.

COMFORT ABOARD AND ASHORE

After a long day experiencing the best each of the islands has to offer, you get to return to your home away from home. And now that both Silver Wind and Silver Whisper have received enhancements inspired by Silver Muse, you are sure to enjoy the most elegant and subtle luxury at sea. Delight in the fresh, new scents as you dine in La Terraza or enjoy a cocktail observing the yachting view from the Observation Lounge.
